Sexual Health for Men and Women

A decrease in sex drive is a condition that is unique in the fact that there is no definitive way to monitor it. Doctors have no gauge for what a “normal” sex drive should be, so it is defined differently with each and every patient, whether they're a man or a woman.

If you've noticed a decrease in your libido, it could be due to a number of factors. The solution may be simple, such as a side effect from a medication you were prescribed. It could be the result of the physical and mental anguish resulting from an unrelated chronic pain, or it may be hormonal imbalance.

Whatever the cause, there is treatment available to restore your sexual health and to reinvigorate your sex life!

Sexual Health for him and her

Men’s Sexual Health

A number of factors can lower a man’s sex drive including medication, poor sleep habits, stress and drug or alcohol use. More commonly, erectile dysfunction is at the root of a man’s sexual dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction is a condition plaguing many men at some point throughout their lives and is characterized by the difficulty or the inability to produce and maintain an erection during sex. This telltale symptom is often accompanied by a decrease in libido. Albeit a source of embarrassment for men, causing a sense of emasculation, erectile dysfunction is treatable. At the Optimal Aging Institute & Urology Care Center, we take a comprehensive approach to erectile dysfunction treatment. Your treatment options may include:

  • Prescription Medications: Erectile dysfunction medications are available by prescription. These medications, when taken, are used to facilitate sexual stimulation by improving blood supply to the penis.
  • Vacuum Erection Device (VED): VEDs, similarly, aim to improve blood flow to the penis in order to produce an erection. VEDs consist of a cylinder that is placed over the penis and a vacuum pump which, when engaged, creates a vacuum seal which helps produce an erection. VEDs are usually recommended for patients who suffer from moderate erectile dysfunction.
  • Hormone Replacement Pellet Therapy: Erectile dysfunction is, in many cases, caused by an imbalance of androgen hormones, particularly testosterone. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is an option that can replenish these depleted hormones by injecting hormone pellets that match your body’s naturally occurring hormones. BHRT offers a safe and effective option to treat erectile dysfunction, boosting testosterone levels and restoring balance to your sex life.

Women’s Sexual Health

A diminished sex drive in women is often caused by a drop in hormone levels. This can be due to natural phases of life such as menopause or breast feeding, or an unexpected hormonal imbalance. In particular, low estrogen testosterone and progesterone levels are often responsible for a low libido in women. All three of these hormone are known to decline in women as they reach middle age and levels can be exacerbated when combined with stress, toxins and various health conditions. Inadequate levels of these hormone can create painful sex, vaginal discomfort and a significant drop in energy levels – making sex not only undesirable but often agonizing. At the Optimal Aging Institute & Urology Care Center, we help women enjoy sex again by balancing these critical hormones.
